It is often necessary to supplement or replace numerical models
with two dimensional (2D) or three dimensional (3D) physical models
to optimise the structural design and layout for complex physical
environments.
Mott MacDonald has extensive experience in this area. Recent key
projects have involved:
- Physical modelling with miniature Accropode units for the
design of Portobello Marine Platform and Waste Water Treatment
Works, UK
- A 3D physical model of a ‘berm breakwater’ protection slope for
the new Funchal Airport runway extension, Madeira
- A combination of 2D and 3D models for the Portobello Shore
platform, Sussex
- A programme of 2D modelling of sea defences for the River
Humber
Many recent studies indicate that a combination of 2D and 3D
modelling can provide a more cost effective solution compared to
the use of 3D modelling alone.
