Breakwaters

Aerial view of the completed new South Breakwater at Hartlepool

High quality natural harbours are rare and, in many cases, the required sheltered water conditions can only be obtained by the construction of breakwaters.

Mott MacDonald has been responsible for the design and construction of breakwaters around the world. Our specialists keep up to date with current design developments, for example, with the use of second generation concrete armour units and in the application of reef breakwater techniques.

In the UK, we designed the breakwater at Hartlepool using ACCROPODE (R) units as part of the Marina Hartlepool project. Key examples of other breakwaters we have designed include the ‘berm breakwater’ sea protection for the new Funchal Airport extension in Madeira, as well as the Dolos armoured breakwater in Oman.
